African Relish Karoo Gourmet Cycle Tour

Imagine the scene – it’s early in the morning and the wheels of your bicycle sing along the tarmac as the first blush of day unwinds like a skein of rose-gold yarn, painting the skies above the Swartberg Pass in soft hues of turmeric and cayenne. You breathe the fragrant, herbaceous air of the Karoo deep into your lungs as you paddle along and descend into the spellbinding Gamkaskloof while day breaks like an unsung song. Now, if only there was a Wimpy nearby. Jokes! Naturally you will be enjoying a spectacular gourmet breakfast in the veld at whimsical Kliphuisvlei after all that. And this, my friend, is just one of the tasty experiences that await on the 6-day African Relish Karoo Gourmet Cycle Tour. Follow in our slipstream to find out more.

Highlights

  • Six-day or three-day gourmet cycling adventure
  • Traversing the majestic Swartberg Pass & Meiringspoort
  • Visiting the spellbinding Gamkaskloof (AKA ‘Die Hel’)
  • Meeting & interacting with local food producers
  • Cooking with local produce like olives, figs, venison & lamb
  • Eating a LOT (and SO well!)

Overview

What’s better than a cycling excursion through a beautiful environment, followed by a delicious breakfast somewhere pretty? Six whole days of cycling interspersed with breakfasts, dinners, and lunches prepared by passionate chefs and local producers – that’s what! The original African Relish Karoo Gourmet Cycle Tour has been a regular event in Prince Albert for the past decade, with both mountain- and road cycling enthusiasts flocking here in their droves to cycle and cook up a storm. We can certainly see why!

Hosted by the super talented team behind African Relish Cooking School, this gourmet adventure is tailormade for cycling foodies who want to indulge in outrides up the Swartberg Pass, down into ‘Die Hell’, all the way to De Rust and Weltevrede Valley, and then sit down to picture-perfect meals that showcase the best Prince Albert and surrounds has to offer. Breakfasts are served al fresco and guests are entertained throughout the day with excursions that involve storytelling, olive- and wine tastings, stargazing, a fig farm tour, and plenty of cooking lessons.

Guests can choose to take part for the full six days and five nights or have the option of selecting 4 days and 3 nights from the existing itinerary to tailor a shorter encounter if they can rustle up a group of four or more. Keen to make it a road trip from Cape Town? Sure thing – you’re more than welcome to enjoy a self-drive experience. However, if you’d prefer to be picked up in the Mother City and ferried to Prince Albert in style, that is an option as well.

Accommodation is provided in the beautiful (and we do mean picture-flippen-perfect) renovated Karoo Cottages that form part of the African Relish portfolio, and the price of the tour includes all the meals you’ll enjoy at the cooking school and local eateries in the vicinity.

In short – the African Relish Karoo Gourmet Cycle Tour is a wonderful couple of days full of good, clean fun on the road followed by beautiful meals and the company of like-minded fit foodies. Resident chef Camilla and assistant manager Donovan Ontong are standing by to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch. Take this wonderful opportunity to meet the epic Karoo locals and experience the region’s stunning, semi-arid countryside. PS. When the going gets tough, fellow riders are there to help you along or you can kroek a little and travel in the backup vehicle for a while.
