Breathe & Be: Foodie and wellbeing retreat on a farm

Retreat. Funny word that. It sounds like the kind of thing where you get to reconnect with nature, give yourself a break from the craziness of everyday life and take some time to just breathe and be. It also sounds like you’re going to be pretty flippen hungry while you’re doing so. Well, fret no more Eatsplorers – renowned Pilates instructor and wellness expert Dominique Beaumont and her husband Chef Santi Louzán have joined forces to bring you a brand-new kind of retreat on Kogman & Keisie Guest Farm outside of Montagu. Yes, there will be yoga, Pilates and meditation in gorgeous outdoor spaces. Sure, you will be nourishing your body with wholesome, healthy food. The kicker is that that food will be filling, satisfying and super delicious and you will have a hand in making it with ingredients grown right there on the farm itself. There will even be wine! Overview

“We live such busy, hectic lives these days with everyone in a rush and on the go – always on social media, always on our phones, always on our laptops. It is so important to step away from the intensity of daily life and just take some time to breathe and be,” says Dominique Beaumont, a South African-born Pilates and yoga teacher who studied at some of the most celebrated movement institutions in London and New York.

Dominique and her husband Chef Santi Louzán are a vibrant, energetic couple with a sincere love of food, wellness and the pursuit of sustainable living. They host regular Chef’s Table events at their inner-city loft apartment in Cape Town CBD and have now expanded their offering to include Breathe & Be Foodie & Wellbeing Retreats on Kogman & Keisie Guest Farm outside of Montagu.

“The pursuits of wellness takes many forms,” says Dominique. “Eating and interaction with food is such an evocative experience, and it’s something we have to do at least two to three times a day, so why not make it a joy born of passion? Combine this with focussed movement, breathing and meditation and everything comes together to draw you into the moment. Santi and I have always wanted to tailor experiences that would give people the opportunity to let go of their daily pressures and indulge in restorative sensory experiences. When we visited Kogman & Keisie Guest Farm outside of Montagu on a weekend away, we immediately knew that this would is the perfect place to do so.”

“As soon as you set foot on the farm, the realness and authenticity of the space grounds you, and the awe-inspiring reality of the nature just floods in. As well as being a completely rural and real working farm, Kogman & Keisie is also lovingly tended by the owners, who have created luxurious accommodation spaces that open up onto views you would not believe. Petrus and Liana themselves are wonderful as well – they are so warm and friendly and really make you feel at home. Their little boy runs and plays around on the farm with the sheep and chickens, and it always feels like you’re being welcomed into a family.”

The weekend-long retreat will run from Friday to Sunday and include morning- and evening outdoor movement classes, immersive cooking encounters with Santi, as well as plenty of downtime to rest, explore or just be.

“Santi and I have lived in cities for most of our life together, including London, New York and Cape Town. But at heart we are farm-loving, country-loving people. Santi grew up on a farm and comes from a long line of farmers and fishermen which shaped his passion for home-grown, real ingredients produced in a way that is natural and sustainable. Throughout the retreat, he will using ingredients produced on Kogman & Keisie itself – whatever is in season and we are able to harvest will be incorporated into the meals we serve. The rest of the ingredients will be sourced locally from suppliers throughout the area. We’ll also have local wine producers presenting their wines, and retreaters will even be able to go on egg-collection missions in the morning.”

“Dinners will be served in the greenhouse by candlelight, while breakfasts and lunches will be enjoyed under the pergola terrace just outside of the farmhouse. We want guests to have an opportunity to explore and experience the variety of wonderful spaces on the farm, so we include as many natural settings as possible during our movement sessions, meals and casual get-togethers throughout the weekend.”

The Farm Stay

Owners Petrus and Liana take great joy in running their working farm according to low-impact principles and have taken amazing strides in carving out an incredibly scenic space that celebrates the biodiversity of their region.

Taking its name from the the dramatic, rock-strewn Kogmans Kloof Valley and the Keisie River that meanders through it, this eco estate nestles in a verdant crook of the mountain, dotted with olive trees, vineyards, vegetable gardens, pomegranate orchards and lavender fields. This is where you will stay in beautiful rustic, airy spaces.

By day, the Karoo sun sits high in the sky, teasing earthy scents from the foliage below, by night the sky stretches spangled with countless stars. Here, nature dictates the passing of the day, which begins at the crack of each pink-tinged dawn and slows down when the amethyst tones of dusk settles on the valley.
