The art of the braai is a South African pastime unlike any other, and local celebrity chef Tjaart Walraven is ready to share all the insider tips and tricks that will take you beyond the braaitjoppie and transform your WEBER grill from a stock-standard kettle braai into an inspiring platform of experimentation. Join him for a delicious braai cooking experience along the beach with majestic Table Mountain as your backdrop, and dig into a sumptuous 4-course meal (that you’ll have a hand in preparing) while you master a variety of new BBQ recipes.

Overview

If you’re a South African, chance are you know how to tan a chop. But, as every true artisan will tell you, there are always ways to hone your craft, right? And now you can do so at the hands of braai master Tjaart Walraven – the exciting new face on the celebrity chef circuit, known as one of the judges on the top-rated The Great South African Bake-Off on BBC Lifestyle.

 

This WEBER braai experiences take place in the gorgeous surroundings of the Lagoon Beach Hotel – a four-star setting overlooking the ocean, with Table Mountain as a backdrop. Here, guests get to experience a hands-on cooking experience, create a gourmet extravaganza on the WEBER and enjoy a delicious, informal meal with like-minded foodies – all in the space of one evening.

 

“I love the Weber grill because there is a real science to the cooking processes that it enables you to master,” says Tjaart. “To me it is very important that it’s not just about roasting a piece of meat – you really have to think about it and plan things in a strategic way, even down to how you set up the fire to get the results that you want. As such, I believe there is as much science as art to it, and that it actually challenges the person behind the grill in a technical way.”

 

The WEBER experiences generally run between 3 and 4 hours, and are suitable for all skill levels. The course feature sustainable, seasonal recipes that represent highlights from Tjaart’s career. Throughout the class, you will be shown how to perfect your knife skills, get the most out of your kettle braai, and how to grill, roast and bake like a pro. Guests can look forward to hands-on instruction in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, tailored to inspire confidence and spark their enthusiasm to expand on prior cooking experience.

 

“I am a natural teacher and I love sharing my ideas, tips, tricks, little bullet points, short cuts and cheats,” says Tjaart. “I really have a passion for sharing my WEBER knowledge with everyone from youngsters to mature braai masters and foodies, and I like to make the experience really fun and interactive.”

 

Using Weber’s lid-on technique on both charcoal- and gas barbecues, chef Tjaart will spend two and a half hours teaching you the best way to cook a number of new and exciting braai recipes. As part of this experience, you’ll also be tasked with creating a part of the evening’s menu. This could include de-boning your own leg of lamb, or cutting and portioning a whole salmon trout. Once everything is braaied to perfection, everyone will sit down to the feast they’ve prepared as a group.
