Angala in Franschhoek has gathered local creators, crafters, chefs, winemakers and beverage producers for a diverse selection of sumptuous chef’s tables and stayover’s that will roll out throughout 2022. It is the kind of interactive dining experience that culinary dreams are made of, so get ready to be inspired and uplifted.

On this amazing planet we call home, there are certain spaces that serve as backdrops against which wonderful stories and delicious experiences are free to unfold.

Located in the heart of the Cape Winelands among the undulating foothills of the mountains that rise majestically between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, Angala is such a place.

It’s a destination of beauty, peace, tranquility, and contentment that has been shaped to celebrate it’s astounding location and provide visitors with passage to precious moments of reconnection and abundance.

In fact, the name ‘Angala’ refers to the time eons ago when the earth was first being formed. Legend has it that this was a period during which the Divine was gathering the energy to create our planet – an instant of limitless potential.

For its custodians, Angala emerged as a refuge at the end of a winding road. They immediately recognised how special this destination was, and set to work to create an amazing retreat that celebrates all the beautiful and restorative things in life.

Today, the barefoot 5-star sanctuary seamlessly integrates luxury with nature – from the self-contained eco-pool, to the expansive indigenous gardens that wrap around the hotel, nestling it in an exclusive oasis of calm and tranquility.

Angala features an intimate selection of 11 luxurious rooms that have each been designed to be unique and inviting, boasting sensory stimulating amenities like outside showers, working fireplaces, private pools, and secluded garden access.

At the heart of Angala is conscious nourishment of beautifully balanced food with dishes crafted from wholesome ingredients and locally sourced produce by experienced in-house chef Max responsible for delectable breakfast lunch and dinner, 365 days a year, catering for any and all dietary requests and requirements.

Now, the visionary proprietors of this sanctuary are inviting local gourmands and touring foodies alike with the opportunity to rediscover the bliss of immersive dining encounters by throwing open their doors to some of South Africa’s most inspiring chefs to create innovative chef’s tables.

8 inspired chef’s tables, 8 local beverage brands, one magnificent location…

The upcoming chef’s tables are much more than just a food and wine pairing and a stay in a gorgeous location, but instead provides guests with the rare opportunity to relax with food-inspired makers, creators and creatives that seek the golden thread that runs between nourishment and joy.

Be sure to arrive by midday, and take your time to settle in and soak away the stress of everyday life with Angala’s aquatic wonders such as the infrared sauna and steam room, ozonated pool and heated plunge pool. The revitalising eco pool allows you to bathe in a living ecosystem of water plants that cradle a clear, natural pool in a lush aquatic garden.

Keen hikers and relaxed wanderers can work up and appetite and take in some fresh air by exploring sections of the hiking routes along the mountain, which are directly accessible from the grounds. Or perhaps you simply want to read or relax whist taking in the expansive vistas?

Dinner itself starts at 18:00. Meet your chef and their drinks partner over a welcome drink, before heading to the long table to take your seat. Here, surrounded by an intimate group of likeminded food lovers the chef’s tables will unfold as a series of delectable courses expertly paired with tailormade drinks or hand-selected wines.

Eat, drink, be merry and learn more about your chef’s food philosophy and what inspires them to make edible art. The chef’s tables are concluded on a sweet note with a delectable dessert and will leave you satiated and ready to enjoy a sumptuous night’s rest. The next morning you get to wake up to the beauty that is Angala in the morning, and an irresistible breakfast of course.

Chef Lapo will be serving an Italian menu paired with amazing cocktails and drinks that include Leonista 100% Karoo Agave Spirits.

Chef Lapo, of Lapo’s Kitchen fame, descends from true-blue Italian cooking royalty, and learned the incredibly subtle art of creating hearty yet delicate dishes from his passionate Tuscan mother. It’s really no wonder he won the Italian version of MasterChef in 2013!

Since then, we were lucky enough that he hopped the pond to join us in Cape Town, where he has immersed himself in the local food landscape to dream up incredible dishes that wrap that innately Italian flare around seasonal, South African ingredients.

Think along the lines of traditional Tuscan meatballs paired with a grape-and-honey crumble infused with burnt sage and charred orange, served with a black coffee reduction. Other signature dishes you might get stuck into is his homemade ravioli filled with butternut and ricotta, served with sage butter and crumbled amaretti biscuits or his wild boar bolognese with homemade pappardelle. Bellissima!
